ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Long-term care facilities (LTCFs) are high-risk settings for the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The aim of the study was to describe the extent and the impacts of 2021 COVID-19 outbreaks on LTCFs in Taiwan. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the data of each COVID-19 outbreak in LTCFs from May 15 to July 31, 2021 in Taiwan. We characterized the features of LTCFs with outbreaks and compared the characteristics of infected staff members and residents of the affected LTCFs. RESULTS: COVID-19 outbreaks were reported in 16 LTCFs (0.9%). The outbreak was significantly associated with LTCFs with ≥50 beds [adjusted odds ratio (aOR), 6.3; 95%confidence interval [CI], 1.9-21.1] and location of Taipei metropolitan area (aOR, 4.6; 95%CI, 1.7-12.8). Resident cases accounted for 75.4% (203/269) of confirmed cases affected by outbreaks. The 30-day all-cause mortality was 24.2% for residents only and was significantly associated with age ≥65 years [adjusted hazard ratio (aHR, 4.3; 95%CI, 1.7-10.5)], presence of symptoms on diagnosis (aHR, 2.2; 95%CI, 1.3-3.7), and LTCF occupancy rate ≥80% (aHR, 3.0, 95%CI, 1.3-7.4). CONCLUSION: COVID-19 outbreaks have a critical impact on residents in LTCFs owing to the advanced age and high prevalence of chronic comorbidities in this population. Multi-pronged infection control measures and mass testing are vital for mitigating COVID-19 transmission in LTCFs.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, a multi-strain coinfection model with amplification (or mutation) is established to characterize the interaction between common strain and amplified strain, as well as vaccination. The basic reproduction number ℛ0 is derived, from which the criteria on the existence and local (or global) stability of equilibria (including disease-free, dominant-strain and coexistence-strain) are established. By analyzing the effectiveness of vaccination, we find that a critical inoculation level could make the disease eliminate when ℛ0<1, while inefficient vaccines could cause backward bifurcation when ℛ0<1. Based on sensitivity analysis and realistic control policy, the optimal strategy of disease control is obtained. The theoretical results are illustrated by numerical simulation and clinical data of COVID-19 in Morocco.

ABSTRACT

PurposeThis study aims to investigate how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted and changed Airbnb market in the Greater Melbourne area in terms of its temporal and spatial patterns and identify possible shifts in underlying trends in travel activities.Design/methodology/approachA panel data set of Airbnb listings in Melbourne is analysed to compare temporal patterns, spatial distribution and lengths of stay of Airbnb users before and after the COVID outbreak.FindingsThis study found that the COVID disruption did not fundamentally change the temporal cycle of the Airbnb market. Month-to-month fluctuations peaked at different levels from pre-pandemic times mainly because of lockdowns and other restrictive measures. The impact of COVID-19 disruptions on neighbourhood-level Airbnb revenues is associated with distance to CBD rather than number of COVID cases. Inner city suburbs suffered major loss during the pandemic, whereas outer suburbs gained popularity due to increased domestic travel and long stays. Long stays (28 days or more, as defined by Airbnb) were the fastest growing segment during the pandemic, which indicates the Airbnb market was adapting to increasing demand for purposes like remote working or lifestyle change. After easing of COVID-related restrictions, demand for short-term accommodation quickly recovered, but supply has not shown signs of strong recovery. Spatial distribution of post-pandemic supply recovery shows a similar spatial variation. Neighbourhoods in the inner city have not shown signs of significant recovery, whereas those in the middle and outer rings are either slowly recovering or approaching their pre-COVID levels.Practical implicationsThe COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted short-term rental markets and in particular the Airbnb sector during the phase of its rapid development. This paper helps inform in- and post-pandemic housing policy, market opportunity and investment decision.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors' knowledge, this is one of the first attempts to empirically examine both temporal and spatial patterns of the COVID-19 impact on Airbnb market in one of the most severely impacted major cities. It is one of the first attempts to identify shifts in underlying trends in travel based on Airbnb data.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Clinical associations between coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and ischemic stroke (IS) have been reported. This study aimed to investigate the shared genes between COVID-19 and IS and explore their regulatory mechanisms. Methods: Published datasets for COVID-19 and IS were downloaded. Common differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the two diseases were identified, followed by protein-protein interaction (PPI) network analysis. Moreover, overlapping module genes associated with the two diseases were investigated using weighted correlation network analysis (WGCNA). Through intersection analysis of PPI cluster genes and overlapping module genes, hub-shared genes associated with the two diseases were obtained, followed by functional enrichment analysis and external dataset validation. Moreover, the upstream miRNAs and transcription factors (TFs) of the hub-shared genes were predicted. Results: A total of 91 common DEGs were identified from the clusters of the PPI network, and 129 overlapping module genes were screened using WGCNA. Based on further intersection analysis, four hub-shared genes in IS and COVID-19 were identified, including PDE5A, ITGB3, CEACAM8, and BPI. These hub-shared genes were remarkably enriched in pathways such as ECM-receptor interaction and focal adhesion pathways. Moreover, ITGB3, PDE5A, and CEACAM8 were targeted by 53, 32, and 3 miRNAs, respectively, and these miRNAs were also enriched in the aforementioned pathways. Furthermore, TFs, such as lactoferrin, demonstrated a stronger predicted correlation with the hub-shared genes. Conclusion: The four identified hub-shared genes may participate in crucial mechanisms underlying both COVID-19 and IS and may exhibit the potential to be biomarkers or therapeutic targets for the two diseases.

ABSTRACT

Vaccines against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have been in use for over two years, but studies that reflect real-world vaccination coverage and demographic determinants are lacking. Using a multistage stratified random cluster sampling method, we planned to directly explore vaccination coverage and the demographic determinants of different doses of COVID-19 vaccines in Beijing, especially in older populations. All 348 community health service centers in 16 districts were involved. We performed multivariable logistic regression analyses to identify demographic determinants of different coverage rates via adjusted odds ratios (aORs) and 95% CIs. Of the 42,565 eligible participants, the total vaccination coverage rates for ≥1 dose, ≥2 doses, ≥3 doses, and 4 doses were 93.3%, 91.6%, 84.9%, and 13.0%, respectively, but decreased to 88.1%, 85.1%, 76.2%, and 3.8% in the older population. Among all participants, younger (aOR = 1.77, 95% CI: 1.60-1.95), male (aOR = 1.15, 95% CI: 1.06-1.23), and better-educated residents (high school and technical secondary school aOR = 1.58, 95% CI: 1.43-1.74; bachelor's degree aOR = 1.53, 95% CI: 1.37-1.70) were more likely to be fully vaccinated. People who lived in rural areas (aOR = 1.45, 95% CI: 1.31-1.60) and held the new rural cooperative health insurance (aOR = 1.37, 95% CI: 1.20-1.57) established a higher rate of full vaccination coverage. No history of chronic disease was positively associated with a higher coverage rate (aOR = 1.81, 95% CI: 1.66-1.97). Occupation also affected vaccination coverage. Demographic factors influencing the rate of vaccination with at least one or three doses were consistent with the results above. Results remained robust in a sensitivity analysis. Given the highly transmissible variants and declining antibody titers, accelerating the promotion of booster vaccination coverage, especially in high-risk groups such as the elderly, is a top priority. For all vaccine-preventable diseases, rapidly clarifying vaccine-hesitant populations, clearing barriers, and establishing a better immune barrier can effectively safeguard people's lives and property and coordinate economic development with epidemic prevention and control.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To investigate how BBIBP-CorV vaccination affecting antibody responses upon heterologous Omicron infection. METHODS: 440 Omicron-infected patients were recruited in this study. Antibodies targeting SARS-CoV-2 spike protein receptor binding domain (RBD) and nucleoprotein of both wild-type (WT) and Omicron were detected by ELISA. The clinical relevance was further analyzed. RESULTS: BBIBP-CorV vaccinated patients exhibited higher anti-RBD IgG levels targeting both WT and Omicron than non-vaccinated patients at different stages. By using a 3-day moving average analysis, we found that BBIBP-CorV vaccinated patients exhibited the increases in both anti-WT and Omicron RBD IgG from the onset and reached the plateau at Day 8 whereas those in non-vaccinated patients remained low during the disease. Significant increase in anti-WT RBD IgA was observed only in vaccinated patients. anti-Omicron RBD IgA levels remained low in both vaccinated and non-vaccinated patients. Clinically, severe COVID-19 only occurred in non-vaccinated group. anti-RBD IgG and IgA targeting both WT and Omicron were negatively correlated with virus load, hospitalization days and virus elimination in vaccinated patients. CONCLUSIONS: BBIBP-CorV vaccination effectively reduces the severity of Omicron infected patients. The existence of humoral memory responses established through BBIBP-CorV vaccination facilitates to induce rapid recall antibody responses when encountering SARS-CoV-2 variant infection.

ABSTRACT

PurposeThe COVID-19 outbreak has brought serious disruptions worldwide and higher education has been at the forefront of this global pandemic. To adapt to the "new normal”, new technology-backed teaching mode emerges in universities as valued option to integrate face-to-face and remote teaching-learning activities. Blended synchronous learning (BSL) forms part of this new trial. This paper investigates the relevance and implications of BSL for university teaching and learning in the field of property and built environments in and beyond the transitional period of COVID disruptions and a time of global uncertainty.Design/methodology/approachThis paper adopts case study approach to the understanding of BSL and its initial planning and design for property course delivery at the University of Melbourne. A review of literature helps formulate an analytical lens for the delivery mode and its significance and challenge in enhancing student learning experience. It also brings insights from the experience of participant observation.FindingsThis paper envisions new possibilities and challenges projecting the BSL as innovative and useful teaching-learning mode for property and built environments education in and beyond the pandemic. The analysis demonstrates the pedagogical values of BSL in facilitating supportive and equitable learning environment to achieve quality learning outcomes for property education. It identifies opportunities and challenges corresponding the underlying logic and practice of BSL.Originality/valueThis paper is the first to examine the use of BSL delivery and its pedagogical significance in post-pandemic property education. It sheds light on innovative pedagogical design for academic institutions to manage pandemic and technological disruptions to teaching-learning.

What is already known about this topic?: So far, no descriptive analysis has been conducted on community residents with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) nucleic acid self-sampling in China. What is added by this report?: This report found that self-sampling had a wide age and regional distribution, with the time from self-sampling to result-reporting typically taking less than one day. Additionally, self-sampling was found to save a considerable amount of manpower and medical resources compared to regular sampling. What are the implications for public health practice?: The experience of prevention and control measures during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has provided a reference for the prevention and control of other infectious diseases through self-sampling.

ABSTRACT

Recent advances in flexible wearable devices have boosted the remarkable development of devices for human-machine interfaces, which are of great value to emerging cybernetics, robotics, and Metaverse systems. However, the effectiveness of existing approaches is limited by the quality of sensor data and classification models with high computational costs. Here, a novel gesture recognition system with triboelectric smart wristbands and an adaptive accelerated learning (AAL) model is proposed. The sensor array is well deployed according to the wrist anatomy and retrieves hand motions from a distance, exhibiting highly sensitive and high-quality sensing capabilities beyond existing methods. Importantly, the anatomical design leads to the close correspondence between the actions of dominant muscle/tendon groups and gestures, and the resulting distinctive features in sensor signals are very valuable for differentiating gestures with data from 7 sensors. The AAL model realizes a 97.56% identification accuracy in training 21 classes with only one-third operands of the original neural network. The applications of the system are further exploited in real-time somatosensory teleoperations with a low latency of <1 s, revealing a new possibility for endowing cyber-human interactions with disruptive innovation and immersive experience.

ABSTRACT

UNSTRUCTURED: The ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has not only posed a serious threat to public health but has also imposed a heavy burden on medical systems and global economies. To combat this challenge, unprecedented efforts have been made by governments and the scientific community in the development and production of vaccines. As a result, less than a year elapsed between identification of a novel pathogen sequence and large-scale vaccine rollout. However, much of the focus and debate has increasingly shifted to the looming risk of global vaccine inequity and whether we could do more to modify this risk. In this paper, we first outline the scope of inequitable vaccine distribution and identify its truly catastrophic consequences. Then, from the perspectives of political will, free markets and profit-driven enterprises based on patent and intellectual property protection, we analyze in-depth the root causes why this phenomenon is so difficult to combat. Apart from these, some specific and crucial solutions that should be undertaken in the long term were also put forward, in order to provide a useful reference for the authorities, stakeholders and researchers involved in addressing this global crisis and the next one.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, we find that better environmental, social and governmental (ESG) performance is associated with a greater magnitude of bank loans and a lower ratio of guaranteed loans in China. The relation is mainly driven by social and governmental factors while the environmental factor plays an insignificant role. Our main findings are robust to a battery of sensitivity tests, including alternative measures of ESG performance and bank-loan contracting, as well as different approaches to address potential endogeneity. Additional analysis indicates that reduced risk and increased information environment might be channels by which ESG performance affects bank-loan contracting while state ownership and the COVID-19 outbreak moderate that impact. Overall, this paper reveals that in emerging markets, the sub-dimensional ESG factors have heterogeneous impacts on loan contracting that are quite different from those found in developed markets.

ABSTRACT

Human life is deeply influenced by infectious diseases. A vaccine, when available, is one of the most effective ways of controlling the spread of an epidemic. However, vaccine shortage and uncertain vaccine effectiveness in the early stage of vaccine production make vaccine allocation a critical issue. To tackle this issue, we propose a multi-objective framework to optimize the vaccine allocation strategy among different age groups during an epidemic under vaccine shortage in this study. Minimizing total disease onsets and total severe cases are the two objectives of this vaccine allocation optimization problem, and the multistage feature of vaccine allocation are considered in the framework. An improved Strength Pareto Evolutionary Algorithm (SPEA2) is used to solve the optimization problem. To evaluate the two objectives under different strategies, a deterministic age-stratified extended SEIR model is developed. In the proposed framework, different combinations of vaccine effectiveness and vaccine production capacity are investigated, and it is identified that for COVID-19 the optimal strategy is highly related to vaccine-related parameters. When the vaccine effectiveness is low, allocating most of vaccines to 0-19 age group or 65+ age group is a better choice under a low production capacity, while allocating most of vaccines to 20-49 age group or 50-64 age group is a better choice under a relatively high production capacity. When the vaccine effectiveness is high, a better strategy is to allocate vaccines to 65+ age group under a low production capacity, while to allocate vaccines to 20-49 age group under a relatively high production capacity.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: A more comprehensive understanding of the trends of incidence, prevalence, and mortality in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and their complex interrelationships, may provide important evidence for decision-making related to HIV prevention and control. The variances in these indices between different population groups, genders, and ages are critical to decipher evolving patterns of the HIV epidemic in specific populations. METHODS: A secondary analysis of relevant data was conducted using data extracted from the Global Burden of Disease study of 2019. HIV/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) incidence, prevalence, AIDS-related mortality, and mortality-to-prevalence ratio (MPR) for annual percentage change, average annual percentage change (AAPC), and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using joinpoint regression statistical analysis. RESULTS: The AAPC of HIV/AIDS incidence, prevalence, AIDS-related mortality rate, and MPR were -1.4 (95% CI: -1.6, -1.2), 4.1 (95% CI: 4.0, 4.3), 2.0 (95% CI: 1.7, 2.3), and -2.1 (95% CI: -2.3, -1.8) between 1990 and 2019 globally, and were 3.5 (95% CI: 2.2, 4.8), 6.9 (95% CI: 6.8, 7.0), 8.1 (95% CI: 7.1, 9.1), and 1.2 (95% CI: 0.1, 2.3) in China during the same period. In terms of differences in the preceding indicators by gender, we observed a similar pattern of trends for male and female genders both globally and in China during the entire study period. Each specific age group exhibits a distinct pattern in terms of incidence, prevalence, mortality rate, and MPR both globally and in China. CONCLUSIONS: Prevalence and mortality rates of HIV/AIDS have increased between 1990 and 2019 globally and in China. While the incidence rate and MPR have declined globally over the past three decades, these two indicators are observed to present an increasing trend in China. There is a high HIV burden among young and middle-aged adults globally; however, the elderly have a high HIV burden in China. HIV screening at older age should be scaled up, and patients with advanced HIV disease should be provided early with additional care and health resources.

ABSTRACT

Both coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19) and acquired immune deficiency syndrome(AIDS) are known as category B infectious diseases, which were caused respectively by SARS-CoV-2 and human immunodeficiency virus(HIV). Although HIV infection is not a risk factor for COVID-19, latest clinical studies have shown that HIV-positive COVID-19 patients experience longer disease course and are more likely to have severe COVID-19 compared with HIV-negative COVID-19 patients, especially those with low CD4+ T cells count or with no antiretroviral therapy(ART).In this review, we aim to compare the etiological and pathogenetic differences between COVID-19 and AIDS, and to elucidate the immunological and virologic characteristics of HIV-positive COVID-19 patients, which helps for a better understanding of SARS-CoV-2 and HIV co-infections.

ABSTRACT

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic is an ongoing threat to global health, and the continuing emergence of contagious variants highlights the urgent need for additional antiviral therapy to attenuate COVID-19 disease. The SARS-CoV-2 main protease (3CLpro) presents an attractive target for such therapy due to its high sequence conservation and key role in the viral life cycle. In this study, we designed a fluorescent-luminescent cell-based reporter for the detection and quantification of 3CLpro intracellular activity. Employing this platform, we examined the efficiency of known protease inhibitors against 3CLpro and further identified potent inhibitors through high-throughput chemical screening. Computational analysis confirmed a direct interaction of the lead compounds with the protease catalytic site and identified a prototype for efficient allosteric inhibition. These developments address a pressing need for a convenient sensor and specific targets for both virus detection and rapid discovery of potential inhibitors.

This study aims to investigated COVID-19 vaccine acceptance among people with chronic diseases and the factors correlating with their vaccination hesitancy. The articles were searched in PubMed, Ovid, EMBASE, and web of science databases between December 2019 and October 2022. Cross-sectional studies, including the acceptance of the COVID-19 vaccine by patients with chronic diseases (≥18 years old), were included in this study. The outcomes included the proportion and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) of chronic disease patients willing to be vaccinated and the odds ratio (OR) and 95% CI of correlating factors. The source of heterogeneity was analyzed through meta-regression and subgroup analysis. We included 31 studies involving 57 875 patients with chronic disease. The overall COVID-19 vaccine acceptance among patients with chronic disease was 0.65 (95% CI, 0.59-0.72). The acceptance among the elderly patients was 0.53 (95% CI, 0.26-0.80). South America had the highest COVID-19 vaccine acceptance rate and Asia the lowest, while on a country level, the United Kingdom had the highest acceptance rate among patients with chronic diseases. People with rheumatic immune diseases had the lowest rate of COVID-19 vaccine acceptance. Concerns about vaccine safety had a statistically different effect on acceptance. Overall, the health systems ought to focus on educating specific groups of individuals on the benefits of COVID-19 vaccination and addressing safety concerns.
